You’ve got a new iOS device and want to shift your data from your old Android phone. What are you going to do?

The easiest method many people are using is an app called Move to iOS. This is a free app that, in a few steps, will move all your data safely and securely.

With Move to iOS, you can move everything important, including contacts, messages, images and videos, bookmarks, calendars, and your email accounts.

So how does it work?

The app first creates a private WiFi connection between your Android phone and your new iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch. You then enter a security code, and the transfer begins to copy across all your data and place it in all the right places. The app will even recreate your default email account. As if by magic.

How to use

The Move to iOS app is available from Google Play. It only needs a tiny amount of storage space, 1.4 MB, which is handy if your Android device is almost maxing out. It’s suitable for Android phones and tablets running 4.4 or later. The rating is an above average of 3.2 out of five.

The app is also downloadable from the Apple support center as a .apk file if you can’t or don’t want to use Google Play. The page contains download links for Android 4.3 and earlier and Android 4.4 and later.

Once installed, put your Android phone onto Airplane mode. This is vital.

Next, plug both your Android and new iOS devices into a power outlet. Before starting the transfer, double-check that everything you want to move, including any SD card contents, will fit onto the new iOS device.

If you wish to transfer Chrome bookmarks, update to the latest Chrome version on your Android phone or tablet.

You are now ready to begin transferring your data.

While setting up your new iOS device, find the Apps and Data section and tap to move your Android content. (If you set up your iOS device previously, you can either erase it to start over or move the content manually.)

On the Android device, launch the app and follow the instructions to get your security code.

On the iOS device, tap Continue, then wait for your security code.

On the Android device, select the content you wish to move, then tap Next.

Wait for the transfer to be completed. The loading bar on the iOS device indicates when the transfer is complete. Ignore messages on the Android device.

When the iOS loading bar is finished, tap Done on your Android device. Then continue on your iOS device. Follow the remaining setup process instructions.

Ensure all your content is transferred. Music, PDFs, and books need to be moved manually. Visit the App Store to download apps.
