Right, let's get something straight from the start. This app has nothing to do with sandwiches.

But don't be too disappointed. Instead of chowing down on an overstuffed footlong, you get to ride on the roof of subway trains. Digitally, at any rate.

As a mobile puzzle game, it's actually rather neat and addictive. It bags lots of awesome reviews on Google Play and Apple's App Store.

The makers, Kiloo and SYBO, obviously trust you not to try subway surfing for real. It's extremely dangerous and illegal, so don't even think about it. Alarmingly, given the colorful graphics and cartoon style, it is clearly pitched at children and young people. Google Play quite wisely gives it a 10+ age rating for its fantasy violence.

Now that we have piqued your interest, what's Subway Surfers all about?

Well, there are no intricate plot lines to get your head around. You run as fast as your digital legs will carry you. And dodge oncoming trains. Like you do.

What story there is revolves around three characters, Jake, Tricky, and Fresh trying to get away from the grumpy ticket inspector and his dog. And that's about it.

The rest is speed, skill, and strategy as you leap from subway car roof to subway car roof on your skateboard. And dodge various obstacles that are set in your path.

Updates

Features

● Cool, fun graphics

● Skateboards, hoverboard, and bunny board surfing

● Paint-powered jetpack

● Lightning-fast gameplay

● Challenge and help out your friends

More

The game is free, but purchases are offered in-app to buy more coins and characters.

Reviewers tend to use the words, amazing and awesome, a lot.

The latest update of the game has the Subway Surfers World Tour arrive in Oxford. Since they blabber on about the `historic streets,' it is presumably the Oxford in England.

The update also introduces a new character, Bonnie, the Oxford Surfer, which is odd since Oxford has no subway and their long-awaited tram system is still in the works. Still, we can suspend belief a little bit further.

As per usual, the game involves collecting stuff along the way. In this instance, they are tokens that unlock characters and fun prizes. However, it is not just about solo play. There's a definite social side thanks to weekly events like Mystery Mondays, etc., and interaction with other players.

PROS

● It's free

● The graphics are HD optimized

● No steep learning curve to get into the game

CONS

● Fairly mindless entertainment, but sometimes that's a good thing

How to use

Subway Surfers is downloadable from Google Play and Apple's App Store. You will need 183 MB of storage space and OS 4.4 for the Android app.

Meanwhile, the iOS version requires 346.7 MB of space and iOS 10.or later.

For once, Google Play and App Store users are in close agreement over the game's merits. Subway Surfers picks up a 4.4 out of five at Google Play and a 4.6 out of five at the App Store.
