And when it comes to this game, the fact that it's a spin-off from the makers of Clash of Clans almost certainly guarantees it will be good.
The iconic Clash of Clans has set the bar very high for subsequent titles. But this one from Supercell doesn't disappoint.
It's more than a variation on a theme. It's a game in its own right, but with obvious nods to its parentage as it features the much loved Royales from CofC. The DNA, as they say, is strong in this one.
But does it deliver? Or is it merely a repackaged rehash of the original?

Like a spin-off TV series, there are always going to be comparisons with the original. Neatly, however, Supercell manages to pull this off. There's little here that will make the hair of die-hard Clash fans stand on end.
The heir to Clash of Clans is a fitting tribute to the original but varied enough to be a standalone mobile game to be judged on its own merits.
If you are new to the massive multiplayer scene, the object of Clash Royale is to collect cards and upgrade them. They feature the Clash of Clans foot soldiers, spells, defensive tactics, the Royales, Princes, Baby Dragons, Knights, and more.
The aim is to knock your enemy King and his daughters out of their towers to win crowns, trophies, and glory.
But this is not a solo occupation. You will progress faster by raising a clan. Your job is to lead the Clash Royales to victory. So no pressure then.
While you can play entirely for free and make significant headway in the game, some items can be obtained as in-app purchases using real hard-earned cash. If you don't want to go down the pay-to-win route, you should consider setting up password protection for purchases to avoid any unintended purchases.
