iTunes is one of the original music apps and has seemingly been around since the dawn of the digital age.

Today it is indisputably one of the most preeminent media players for a Mac and, increasingly, a Windows audience.

To be precise, iTunes is a platform that is a media library, an internet radio hub, a mobile device management tool, and a client app for Apple’s iTunes Store.

You can use this versatile app to play, download, and purchase digital multimedia on iOS and Windows. You can organize your multimedia library, create smart playlists, and share your iTunes library with others.

Updates

Stars honored in Apple music awards

Apple announced its Apple Music Awards winners, the second year the tech company has celebrated the industry.

The awards recognize the top musicians of 2020 and mark their contribution to global culture. Streaming data was used to select Song of the Year and Album of the Year. The other categories were decided by a panel of Apple Music editorial experts.

Lil Baby won the Artist of the Year accolade, while Breakthrough artist of the Year went to Megan Thee Stallion. There were wins, too, for Taylor Swift and Roddy Richh.

More

With the advent of the crazily popular iPod and iTunes, Apple revolutionized music. Today, you can now have over 70 million music tracks at your disposal, as well as thousands of curated playlists and daily picks from global music experts.

Apple users will find that the new macOS Catalina moves their iTunes library into the Apple Music app. Their archives are also available across Apple TV, Apple Books, and Apple Podcasts.

iPhone, iPad and the iPod Touch can all sort and sync content via Finder.

PC users can continue to use iTunes for Windows with no problems.

PROS

Optimized for macOS and iOS

Great selection of new and recent titles

You can pay using Apple gift cards

CONS

It does not support Android

Can work out expensive

How to use

You can download iTunes (now Apple Music) for iOS at Apple’s App Store and at Microsoft.com for Windows. The Windows version requires Windows 10 and does virtually everything the native iOS offering can. It spans music, movies, podcasts, and TV shows. You can also download TV series, purchase and rent movies, and more.

Android users are out of luck for the most part. Some iTunes features work on Android, but an armful of caveats accompanies these. If you merely want to listen to music, you are better off with their streaming service, Apple Music.

Confusingly for Android users, perhaps, Apple Music lives within iTunes. But you can listen to endless hours of music and your music archive. And it’s free for a limited time, and there are no ads. If you download your favorite songs, you can listen to them offline.

The Apple support site also has download links for earlier Windows and Mac operating systems.
