It feels like Microsoft Word has been around since the dawn of time. Or at least since the dawn of the computer age. It is without a doubt the world’s most successful word processing tool.

And this is in large part due to it continually evolving and improving over time in order to maintain its dominant position. Its latest incarnation is as a mobile app, allowing users to access Microsoft Word features on the go, wherever they are.

The app version is almost as powerful as the web version you may be used to. For instance, the app lets you read and edit email-attached docs, allowing you to work and collaborate wherever you go. You can create word docs in-app and share them quickly and efficiently.

Even working with PDFs is eminently doable. There’s a built-in PDF reader for mobiles that also lets you edit and read PDFs. Or catch up with reading your latest e-book download.

Creating documents is easy, too, whether it is a letter, a blog post, a template, an updated CV, or a work-related doc. There are a suite of powerful tools to help ensure the formatting is just as you want it.

In reality, you are taking your office with you on your phone or tablet. Collaborating with your team while on the move has never been this simple before.

Features

Create docs from a range of well-crafted contemporary templates

Edit docs with professional formatting and layout

Read, write, and edit all your docs, including PDFs

Save Word docs as PDFs and share them with just a few taps

Great collaboration tools

Premium tools for Microsoft 365 users

More

The free tools you get with the mobile app should be plenty enough for most people. However, to unlock the all-singing-and-dancing version, you will need an eligible Microsoft 65 subscription package for your tablet, phone, PC, or Mac.

You can check where you stand by consulting the Android Terms of Service in Microsoft’s End User License Agreement.

PROS

It’s free to download and use

Microsoft 365 users can unlock the premium tools

Easy to use

Keeps you in the loop whenever you’re out of the office

CONS

Some may find the interface clunky

How to use

The Microsoft Word app is downloadable from Google Play. The OS requirements and storage space vary by device. But you should be good with the most recent versions of Android post-Kitkat and Lollipop and have either an Intel x86 or ARM-based processor on board.

You will need to sign in via a free Microsoft account to edit and create docs if your device has a screen size smaller than 10.1 inches.

The reviews of the app - officially called Microsoft Word: Write, Edit & Share Docs on the Go - on Google Play are a mixed bag. It seems this Android app from Microsoft polarizes users into lovers and loathers. There’s no middle ground. However, most recent reviewers give the app a big thumbs up.

Despite the polarization, the app still manages a highly respectable 4.4 out of five.
